The per capita waste generation of the Balearic Islands suffered a considerable decrease since 2018, after a continuous increase the previous 5 years. This decrease can be attributed to the implementation of the new Balearic waste law, in 2019. Even so, the health crisis due to covid-19 has also influenced the waste generation, causing a generalized decrease in waste, especially in 2020 and in territories with a large influx of tourism, such as the Balearic Islands. In 2021, an increase in the waste generation per capita is again observed, attributable to an improvement in the economic situation and an increase in tourism.

For this reason, it will be necessary to wait some more years to know whereas the policies carried out within the framework of the new law have had a determining effect on waste generation in the Balearic Islands.
